What Each Frequency Is For

ATIS (120.3) broadcasts the current weather, active runway, and any relevant field notices on a continuous loop. Pick it up before you call anyone else so you're not asking ground or tower for information that's already available.

Clearance Delivery (128.6) is where IFR aircraft, and VFR aircraft picking up flight following or a squawk code, get their initial clearance before taxi. Not every flight needs it, but if you do, get it before calling ground.

Ground (121.8) handles taxi instructions to and from the runway, and coordination on the ramp side of the movement area. This is the frequency you'll spend the most time on before and after your actual flight.

Tower (118.9) controls the runways themselves: takeoff clearances, landing clearances, and traffic sequencing in the pattern and on final.

UNICOM (122.95) is the non-towered-style frequency used for FBO coordination and advisories, useful even at a towered field like KAPA for talking to ground handlers or requesting services.
